Holiday season questions and remarks

January 5, 2015

... Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

1 Corinthians 5:6-8

Now that the ‘holiday season’ has passed, let us ask ourselves some pertinent questions.

  • How come the world that has rejected Christ and His teaching come together to celebrate ‘his birthday’?
  • Did Jesus instructed us to commemorate His birthday?
  • Did the apostles and first disciples celebrate Christmas, if so, where is the literature on this subject in the Scriptures?
  • Isn’t Christmas a Roman Catholic celebration with pagan roots – a kind of pagan winter festival that has made its way to our homes via big commercial propaganda?
  • What are believers and non-believers so merry about during this season?
  • Why do we spend so much money (we don’t even have in some cases) buying gifts for family and friends for no particular reason?
  • Why is the ‘holiday season’ the only time of the year we remember about social and income inequalities and feel like sharing our goods with the poor, the hungry, and the homeless?
  • Why do we adorn cars, offices, and homes with garlands, reindeer antlers, lights, etc. Is this biblical?
  • Is having a Christmas tree at home really not that big of a deal?
  • Why do we put on red and green clothes, eat certain foods, and sing carols?
  • What is the “spirit of Christmas”? A companion, rival or replacement for the Holy Spirit?
  • Why do we give our children gifts and pretend somebody else did – Isn’t this a lie, and isn’t lie a sin?
  • Why do we even participate in perpetuating the myth of Santa Claus?
  • By celebrating Christmas and teaching our children to do the same aren’t we following the world and its traditions?

Some may say these are things of little importance or they don’t celebrate Christmas as the world does, but the Scriptures are clear: “Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump”? (1 Corinthians 5:6)

What are we doing dragging the traditions of men inside the Church when we are supposed to be a ‘holy nation’ unto God (1 Peter 2:9)? Let’s think about it.
